Trade: Sharks acquire Torres from Coyotes

The San Jose Sharks have added some grit up front by acquiring forward Raffi Torres from the Phoenix Coyotes for a 2013 third-round pick, according to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun.

Torres, 31, has spent the last year-and-a-half with Phoenix, during which he was infamously embroiled in one of the stiffest disciplinary incidents in league history, getting suspended 25 games for hitting Chicago’s Marian Hossa during last year’s playoffs.

The suspension carried over to this year, a year in which Torres vowed to change his style of play — and it seems to have worked.

Through 28 games the veteran winger has 12 points (5G-7A) and just 13 penalty minutes while averaging close to 13 minutes per contest.

Torres is in the final year of a two-year, $3.5 million deal signed with Phoenix in 2011.
